Book Club Night!

Book Club is the highlight of the month. After all the blah you know you have something to look forward to coming up. Book club goes like this... the hostess of the month picks the book and the place we go, we have dinner then discuss. Our book club is a small manageable number with a nice spread of ages and life experiences so everyone brings something different to the table.

We have discovered that it isn't really the book that makes the club it is the discussions we have. Since this discovery we have decided to rate the book prior to discussion then again after the discussion, because the discussion has been know to kind of boost the quality of the book.

This month we met at our hostess's house and we all brought something to eat. Delish, too much for us all. We got to sit outside enjoy this awesome weather [thank you mother nature.. you finally heard us!] and enjoy a nice Bud Light Lime and some margaritas! Thank you hostess for a great night!

So as you can tell by the picture this months book was Swine Not? by Jimmy Buffett [hence the margaritas]... yes Jimmy Buffet writes books.. who knew. So how was it you ask, well...

Todays review: Dancing with the stars

Pamela Anderson = wtf?! You aren't that hot anymore you seem drunk.. you can go

Aiden Turner = good looks will only get you so far.. you can stay for now

Buzz Aldrin = sorry nice try but I think you are the first to go, we don't have the patience for ya too long. But you're giving it your best

Chad Ochocinco = can't be good at everything.. this will humble you. I give you a few more episodes, we will keep you around to see your chemistry with Cheryl [old lady thinks you two are dancing more than what we see]

Erin Andrews = nothing standing out right now.. you may stay

Evan Lysacek = again you have a skating background so you have a better chance... you could be the sleeper. You may stay

Jake Pavelka = you're a douche

Kate Gosselin = I want to throw you against a wall... [insert tear] "Thank you for not quitting, a lot of people have quite on me in my life." Stop being so whiney, you seem like a stubburn woman. Bless Tony for putting up with you-- I'd rather see you go home than Buzz.

Nicole Scherzinger = I hate to cheer for people who have a strong dance background already, but you seem nice.. you may also stay

Niecy Nash = you have fun and prove bigger girls can party too... you can stay

Shannen Doherty = you look like you are having fun.. you may stay

Just my opinion :)

Earth Hour!

On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people, organizations, corporations and governments around the world will come together to make a bold statement about their concern for climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. In the U.S. where we are already feeling the impacts of climate change, Earth Hour sends a clear message that Americans care about this issue and want to turn the lights out on dirty air, dangerous dependency on foreign oil and costly climate change impacts, and make the switch to cleaner air, a strong economic future and a more secure nation.

Participation is easy. By flipping off your lights on March 27th at 8:30 p.m. local time you will be making the switch to a cleaner, more secure nation and prosperous America.

Since its inception three years ago, Earth Hour’s non-partisan approach has captured the world’s imagination and became a global phenomenon. Nearly one billion people turned out for Earth Hour 2009 – involving 4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents.

Last year, 80 million Americans and 318 U.S. cities officially voted for action with their light switch, joining iconic landmarks from around the world that went dark for Earth Hour

10 Things: To Do Before Turning 30

I had lunch today with an old friend that I haven't seen in awhile. While catching up we discussed that time flies by so fast. It's been almost 6 years since we've been out of High School and so much has changed. Not many people from our class have stayed around the area (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) but so much can change in 6 years. Some of our classmates are married and have children already. Time is literally melting away from us. While we agreed that we don't care that we are getting older, we think that 25 (next year!) is going to hit us in the face a little bit, and not because we are getting older but just because 25 is kind of that benchmark you have in your head. I had many things in mind to have accomplished by 25 and er ah well not quite there which is fine. But 30 will be here in 6 years... here is my list (in no particular order) of 10 things I would like to do before turning 30.

  1. Vist another country (England, Ireland, or France)
  2. Be debt free
  3. Research my family history
  4. Road Trip route 66
  5. Get a tattoo
  6. Throw a dinner party for no reason
  7. Learn how to make a properly mixed drink
  8. Fall madly in Love
  9. Midnight walk on the beach
  10. Finish a marathon

Rainy Day Blues

Quotes are probaly on of my most favorite things in the whole world. When I'm feeling a little down or bored I'll sit and search the internet for quotes. I look for quotes that make me feel better or something I think might come in handy some day, it also makes me feel better that sometimes I'm not the only one feeling this way and there is definately comfort in numbers. These are the ones that cheered me up a little bit today.

"Don't rely on someone else for your happiness and self worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can't love and respect yourself- no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are- completely; the good and the bad- and make changes as you see fit- not becuase you think someone else wants you to be different."
-- Stacy Charter

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
-- Mark Twain

"The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for"
--Allan K. Chalmers

Lessons Learning

A friend at work gave me this list awhile back. I have it hanging on my desk and find myself staring at it every once in awhile. Some of these things are like duh.. no brainer, but some of them really make you think and make me want to do better with life. I am working on a good start to my "bucket list", things I want to accomplish, see and do in my lifetime.. but this is a good list that we can all focus on for this year.

Health:
1. Drink plenty of water. [ easy enough I drink alot of water ]
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar. [ working on it ]
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. [ does fried green beans count in that? ]
4. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy [ Eh..]
5. Make time to pray. [ need to more ]
6. Play more games [ board games? ]
7. Read more books than you did in 2009 . [ already done.. thank you book club ]
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day [ I'll add this to the first five minutes of my morning commute ]
9. Sleep for 7 hours.. [ most of the time ]
10. Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile. [ I've never understood the concept behind people saying to you "smile" if you meet them in the hall... if I had a smile on my face all the time you'd think I was a crazy person ]

Personality:
11. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. [this is really ALOT harder than you think ]
12. Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment. [ I've been more positive and trying to see the positive in the situation.. good job me! ]
13. Don’t over do. Keep your limits. [check.. couldn't handle 5 work days this week.. PV tomorrow :) ]
14. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does. [ I think someone is reading this, clearly not a problem ]
15. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip. [ define gossip ]
16. Dream more while you are awake [ check.. it's called 7 hrs and 45 mins of work.. dreaming of not being there ]
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.. [ working on this one ]
18. Forget issues of the past. Don’t remind your partner with His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness. [ can be difficult ]
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate others. [ I can strongly dislike ]
20. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present. [ I got no beef with you past ]
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. [ beginning to figure this out ]
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. [ really life problems and algebra?! At least with algebra you knew someone had an answer book ]
23. Smile and laugh more. [ every day brings laughter.. thank you work friends ]
24. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree… [ hmmmm ]

Society:
25. Call your family often. [ how about see them instead? ]
26. Each day give something good to others. [ greedy people... isn't my presence enough for you? ]
27. Forgive everyone for everything.. [ whoa whoa whoa.. let's be real here ]
28. Spend time w/ people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6. [ dang the old lady at work isn't quite there... but closer to 70 then 40 since we round up.. ]
29. Try to make at least three people smile each day. [ do I count as one of those ]
30. What other people think of you is none of your business. [ um.. it's about me?! why can't I know ]
31. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. [ will do ]

Life:
32. Do the right thing! [ but how will I know? ]
33. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. [ oh but you can make anything useful ]
34. GOD heals everything. [ true dat.. may take some time though ]
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.. [ yes.. and hopefully for the better ]
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. [ AMEN! ]
37. The best is yet to come.. [ man I sure hope so.. ]
38. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it. [ Thank you! ]
39. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy. [on it! ]

Then after reading this it made me take a step back and realize I still have alot of things to learn. One of the best things about our book club is the spread of people we have, older/younger, married/divorced/single, so many different life experiences that we bring to the table. After every book club I always take away something and it gets me thinking and listening to advice.. I'm kind of at a point in my life where I am starting to see things in a completley different way and listening and learning from others and using the great wealth of knowledge they have.

And lo and behold my favorite blog The Frisky had a story "Things We Wish We Knew About Womanhood At Age 18" some of these responses are things I'm just beginning to think about now at 24... always learning something aren't we-- here are some of the ones that stood out to me:

“Once you start working post-graduation, you have 40 more years of it coming, so do not get down on yourself if things don’t happen instantly"

“That you probably won’t have the American Dream by 25 unless your parents arrange a marriage for you and pass down their uber-successful business.”

“Nothing outside of yourself will ultimately make you happy. That all happiness is generated from within and will not come to you through, guys, career, kids, or any life circumstances.”

" It gets way harder to meet new people post-college, so explore and talk to all the new people you can.”

“You will eventually get over your first love who broke your heart so many times ... and many years later you’ll just throw his jail missive in the trash.”

What have you learned, wish you had know at a younger age or know you are still learning?

Shouldn't Falling Hurt?

I was always under the impression that falling off of something would hurt. Seems to be the case that perhaps every fall does not merit pain.. well at first anyway. I have indeed fallen off the wagon. I blame girl scout cookies for the initial stumble, and delicious Cadbury cream eggs and their mini-companions for the heave over the side.

A few folks at work have been being big losers... or trying at least. After the terrible terrible event of the great tonsil ejection I lost about ten pounds :) My first goal was to not gain that back, which I thought would be really hard.. I went from eating nothing to eating regular food and my sis and I had been going to the gym pretty regularly, and I kept it off pretty good. Then the girl scout cookies came along, and I tripped a little. Then working the early shift made me a little bit tired and the gym wasn't such a priority. Then came the evil pizza and Easter candy and that my friends was the straw that broke this camel's back and off the wagon I went.

While the carnage is not as bad as it could have been.. a bruised ego and back to where I started weight wise, I guess I'll be ok. Pull myself up by the boot straps, dust myself off, and hop back up on that there wagon. Not gonna lie there may be a few more cadbury eggs and a peep or two, but as soon as I get my butt back in the gym I think I'll be on the right direction again. A month left until our contest ends, I may not end up being the biggest loser, but I hope to be a loser none the less. So onward we go, we aren't circling those wagons just yet.

Farmville Intervention Needed For America

For the record: I DO NOT participate in Farmville nor will I ever. I honestly do not understand its draw. IF you feel the need to put forth this much effort into a game.. remove your bottom from the computer chair and insert it into the outdoors, say maybe in a garden, where you can acutally get something tangible from your efforts. The people who do play farmville are VERY committed to this application and there is quite a following judging by the pollution it causes on my facebook page.

It is time America, consider this your intervention!! Step 1... you have a problem!

Excuse me for not sending you boards to build a horse stable, or fertilizing your crops.

Actual facebook status that I am constantly bombarded with:
" ok farmville peps. this is what i need... i need one window, aged bricks, weathered boards and vines... i still need nails and horse shoes for my barn.... let me know what you need and i will do my best to get it for you."

"2 bricks and 5 harnesses...Im almost there!!!! Dont forget about my barn raise either!!!!"

"Farmville Friends - I still need help expanding my chicken coop. Please and thank you!! :)"

"I have all the windows and slates for my house, I need 8 bricks,3 weathered board & 4 vines."

At least they are polite and say please and thank you right?!

Here are my suggestions to you Farmville addicts:

The 12 Steps
1.We admitted we were powerless over Farmville--that our lives had become unmanageable.
2.Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3.Made a decision to turn our will, and our lives, over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5.Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6.Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7.Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8.Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9.Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10.Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11.Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12.Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to Farmaholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Please be mindful of these 12 steps and take action today. If you must participate in this work of the devil please be mindful that not everyone is willing to give you boards, harvest your crops, or raise your barn. Let's keep your notifications that give you ribbons for growing a fake garden to yourself.. who cares?! I know I don't... so please seek help you fake farmers.

PS: If you or anyone you know may be offended by this post.. it's because you have the problem I am referring to.

Why Do we say that?

There are several terms we use in our everyday but I have no idea where the term came from. I took the liberty of researching a few of the common ones I could think of and how they came to be...

- "riding shotgun": stagecoach guards rode shotgun - they just didn't call it that in the 1880s, as far as anyone has yet discovered. The term "riding shotgun" to refer to the guard sitting next to the driver doesn't emerge from the Old West but rather from movies and TV shows about the Old West. To date no one has found a cite for "riding shotgun" during the time stagecoaches were actually used.

- "three sheets to the wind": It refers to having three sails rigged on a sailing boat, a sail was also known as a sheet. I think it was a tactic used in runnng a boat through a storm, erratically, hence becoming a simile for being drunk and unable to walk in a straight line...

- "bakers dozen": means thirteen. This old saying is said to come from the days when bakers were severely punished for baking underweight loaves. Some added a loaf to a batch of a dozen to be above suspicion.

- "earmark a page": comes from the days when livestock had their ears marked so their owner could be easily identified.

- "from the horse's mouth": You can tell a horse’s age by examining its teeth. A horse dealer may lie to you but you can always find out the truth 'from the horse’s mouth'.

- "kick the bucket": When slaughtering a pig you tied its back legs to a wooden beam (in French buquet). As the animal died it kicked the buquet.

- "mind your p's and q's": In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down.

- "give the cold shoulder": In the Middle Ages when someone had over stayed their welcome in someone's home, instead of the invitation to dinner, a "cold shoulder" of lamb would be sent to their room at dinner time.

You Know You're Growing Up When...

- the thought of sleeping in until 7 gets you excited
- you actually get excited about buying/picking out a new vaccume
- you stop asking for "wants" for Christmas and now ask for "needs" (yes I do ask for socks and get excited when I get them)
- kids these days have forgotten about the amazing shows Nickelodeon used to have
- you remember staying home and watching TGIF on Friday's
- you find yourself saying "No I don't really need that alot"
- you realize Office Space is not just a funny movie.. it is real
- you need to take a nap most days
- the fact that I just said "kids these days"
- you have to make sure you get to bed early enough to get up at the buttcrack of dawn, which for me right now is 5am-ish (depending on the snooze button)

That'll Do Pig... That'll Do.

Lately there have been pigs everywhere I look.. what gives? First there was this months book club book Swine Not by Jimmy Buffet... don't even get me started on that book, that's a whole other blog that will wait until book club night. But that book was 54 chapters of pig, did this book warp my mind to be dialed into pigs??? Maybe I have the new car syndrome, you know where you buy a new car then you see a million of them all around? OK so that was pig number 1.

Pig number two, I found myself watching Babe. It is actually a really really cute movie, although James Cromwell is kind of a jerk old man. It makes you wonder what animals really are thinking and what they would say if they could talk.

Pig number three came while watching one of my favorite tv shows, How I Met Your Mother. I must say that if this had been any other week and any other day I would have never thought twice about it.. but after spending several days reading a book about a stupid pig who lives in New York City, finding my self glued to a talking pig story, then to come across a random pig on HIMYM.. it was just too much!! But I do have to say that the pig was seriously one of the cutest things I had ever seen.. a teacup pig. My sister and I literally got the high squeaky voice and "oh my god that is the cutest thing ever" yep it happened. Take a look for yourself at what a teacup pig looks like... get ready to oooh and ahhh over him.
And I pretty much want one!

Way Back When

Since we began our book club The Page Turners at work I often find myself involved in many conversations about books. Today we got started talking about books for kids which in turn got us on the topic of favorite books from when we were younger.

It's funny how you completely forget about things from your childhood until you begin talking them with others. We got to talking about the book series Goosebumps. While I don't remember any of the books and their plots I do remember the joy they brought. I remember being in elementary school and once a week, the best time of the week, we would get to go to the library. We would begin our library days with Mrs. Titus reading us a book. Then as the book finally closed she would let us go and find our own books! yay! In elementary school we used paint sticks to put in the place where we would pull our book from, being younger we didn't quite have the Dewey decimal system figured out just yet. We would race to the Goosebump section of the library. I was discussing with a co-worker today how awesome the Goosebump book covers were, when you ran your hand over the cover of the book the title was embossed with nothing else but goosebumps. Like I said I don't really remember any of the actual stories but I remember on book cover in particular sticking out in my mind, The Haunted Mask I even remember a few of the stories being made into an after school TV show. How millions of children didn't have nightmares on a nightly basis we'll never know... but they got kids to read! Do they even still do that or does the xbox read to them nowadays?

Really thinking about I used to read alot when I was younger. What girl didn't grow up wanting to be Claudia, Kristy, Mary Ann, Stacy, Dawn and Jessi. I know I had all the dolls, and had a Baby sitters club of my own. I have a crap ton of these books stowed away in some rubber totes patiently waiting for the day when I can give them to my kids. There are literally hundreds of books in this series, it's mind boggling that someone would be able to think of that many stories and successfully market the whole brand. There were dolls, movies, baby sitters club packets that really made you want to babysit. The series began in 1986 (awesome year) and ended in 2000. I was unaware that the books had been out of print since then. It's hard to think of children growing up without these books in their lives. Most of my BSC books were accumulated through our monthly book orders from school, man those were the best! I read today that April of this year the books will be re-issued and updated, how exciting!

My all-time favorite books from my childhood however are the books I grew up hearing. The Berenstain Bears, The Spooky Old Tree and Love you Forever. These were the books that I had heard one hundred million times. I could recite these books from memory even before I knew how to read. I love love love these books and I'm pretty sure I have had multiple copies because the originals had been worn out. The Spooky Old Tree is still a good fun read, definitely check it out. Love you Forever however is complete tear jerker, it is such a sweet story and so cute that it literally makes me tear up every time I read it. If you ever have someone who is expecting this should be the first book on your list for a gift. I also need to squeeze in the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar which was also a staple in my library. There are so many books I could go on and on.

I feel like I can't have this topic without mentioning A Light in the Attic,Where the Sidewalk Ends, and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Which were huge staples in my book reading young life. I don't even know how many times those books were fought over in the library..quietly of course. The poems, stories, and illustrations in these books are timeless. I also cannot end without mentioning the wonderful Dr. Suess books as well, but those should be a given. The lessons in his books are still pertinent today and I'm pretty sure Oh, the Places You'll Go! was used in a valedictorian speech at my graduation. But I think my favorite Dr. Suess book, besides The places you'll go is The Sneetches when you're little you don't see the political messages you just love the silly rhymes and love to read along. Dr. Suess sure knew what he was doing and those lessons still need to be learned today.

I'm glad that books are still around and that I still read them. I hadn't really been for awhile but our book club at work has really gotten me back into reading and Jane is my inspiration, still have a long long way to go to read as many books as she does, but maybe one day! So in closing I'd like to thank my elementary school librarian Mrs. Titus for helping us youngins find some really good books and getting us interested in reading and making it fun!

A Long Way From GA?

Moving sucks. I have moved from GC -> my 1 bedroom apt in Champaign -> my two bedroom apartment in Champaign -> back to GC and here I sit. But I want to move so bad, not because I'm unhappy where I am I just want to have the experience of living in another state. I want to meet new people and experience new things. I have narrowed down my state selection to the south. I think that I am a southern girl at heart just born in the Midwest. Georgia is my first choice. It is such a beautiful state and so much to see and such tradition, the same well for really any state on my list here. My other choice are South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama and maybe Tennessee. I think there is just something liberating about just up and moving. It won't be easy and I don't pretend to think that it would be. I'm still young and have a lot of years left in me, so why waste them all in one place. I wish I had an infinite amount of money so that I could travel, I mean I've never even flown anywhere.

It sounds corny but I just want to be a life student.. no not school. Just learning from people listening to their stories. I wish I was one of those people who could just walk up to a stranger (not a creepy stalker I have candy stranger) just someone I don't know and strike up a conversation. I have so much admiration for people who just backpack through Europe and rely on the generosity of others, just getting to know people. I have alot of things on my bucket list that I would like to do but I really would like to move to Georgia. Just waiting for a few things to get paid off and some money saved and within the next couple of years hopefully I will coming to to you live from GA!

My favorite blog The Frisky has some other reasons why moving is a good thing:

1. Change is good. Whether you’re stuck in a rut or just think you are, moving to a new city can help push you in new directions. The challenge of relocation and the inevitable excitement of “finding yourself” again in a new place force you to rethink who you are, and what you really want out of life.

2. Diversity rules. If you’ve always lived in the same place, there are a great many benefits. You’ve got close family, a tight circle of friends, and you know your place backwards and forwards. There is something comfortable about fitting in. But encountering new types of people and new ways of living will reshape who you thought you were into who you can become.

3. Eat it up. You’re not merely changing your place on a map. Depending on how far you go, you’re exposing yourself to a whole new culture. Never lived in the South? That’s a whole differently culinary experience. Dying to immerse yourself in the ethnic melting pot that is New York City? Go for it! Your palate and your outlook will never be the same.

4. It’s not that hard. The secret to moving on a quasi-regular basis is simple. Don’t accrue too much stuff. Think about what you really need. Various experiences in my life have taught me that it’s not what you have in the world, it’s what you have inside. Dump the chairs and extra clothes. When you live light, you can gather more experiences, and, in the end, that’s what counts.

5. It’s not permanent. Don’t like where you end up? Don’t worry! You can always move again. Just make sure you give it a chance, before you go back to the place from whence you came. Whether you’re working out at a new yoga studio, meeting new friends that you only knew online previously, or are wading into a whole new dating pool, if you embrace your new city, it may embrace you right back.

What couldn't you live without?

Days that I couldn't think things could get any crappier I have to take a moment and think of some of the little things that help me get through life and a few things that I may or may not be able to live without...

- my velvet tuberose body cream (I sometimes feel the need to stock up just in case they discontinue it!)
- a pair of jeans that fit just right
- my ipod on bad days at work
- good music to fill my ipod
- something so funny it makes you cry
- Victoria and her secrets to make you feel sexy
- my favorite perfume- Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker
- my silly sister that annoys me so much sometimes
- my comfy PJ's
- my cat Domino
- the Internet
- bad reality TV shows that I can't stop watching once I get hooked
- a great quote from someone wise to help you find your way again
- somedays Facebook
- brewed Ice Tea
- shamrock shakes from McDonalds
- Harley Davidson
- Covergirl lash exact mascara
- having a Bachelor's degree
- itunes
- my sound machine to help me fall asleep

So what are some things you couldn't live without??

Weekend Edition of things I Love.

This I love..
- that it is finally getting warmer out
- my mom got me HBO for a belated Bday present, now I can watch True Blood
- there is little snow to be seen anymore (hope it stays that way)
- the sound of my new Vance & Hines pipes on the Harley
- having the neighbor give me thumbs up as I pull out of the driveway on the Hog
- the smell of a Harley dealer when you walk in
- the world coming alive because of the weather (walkers, runners, people out enjoying themselves)
- people getting whiplash taking a look at my bike
- the fact that I got out to ride today.

Basically I love my motorcycle.

Have you made your picks?

We are in the midst of Award season if you were unaware. Red carpets, beautiful or sometimes hideous gowns, and Joan Rivers dolling out fashion advice. I love to park it on E! hours before the show begins to checkout the red carpet arrivals and critique their fashion like I think I have any myself (music starts playing) ok I'm rambling so without further adieu...

Here are my Oscar predictions for the major categories
Leading Actor- Colin Firth "A Single Man"
Leading Actress- Sandra Bullock "The Blind Side"
Supporting Actor- Matt Damon "Invictus"
Supporting Actress- Maggie Gyllenhaal "Crazy Heart"
Animated Feature- Up
Best Picture- Avatar

I went with Avatar for Best Picture not only because of the hype but also because I did actually see it and I didn't love it per say, but it was a good movie, amazing special/visual effects and completely unlike anything I have seen lately with movies. I used to go to the movies a lot but in recent times I haven't been as much so I don't have a whole lot to judge on. But it's an original idea and with all the sequels and remakes it was refreshing to see something different.

Best Picture winners can sometimes be surprising or maybe even an upset. Let's take a quick look back at the winners from the past:
2008 - “Slumdog Millionaire”
2007 - “No Country for Old Men”
2006 - “The Departed”
2005 - “Crash”
2004 - “Million Dollar Baby”
2003 - “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”
2002 - “Chicago”
2001 - “A Beautiful Mind
2000 - “Gladiator”
1998 - “Shakespeare in Love”
1997 - “Titanic”
1994 - “Forrest Gump”
1943 - “Casablanca”
1939 - “Gone with the Wind”

It's hard to imagine that movies about hobbit folk can be compared to some of the great classics like Gone with the Wind and Casablanca... those movies are timeless. It's hard to imagine one day people will look back on Lord of the Rings and consider it a cinematic classic. Well good luck to all those nominated and I can't wait to tune in Sunday! and sidenote If anyone ever has a Oscar party I'd love to come, I've always wanted to go to one!

Thank a Girl Scout Today

Lemonades and tagalongs and thin mints, Oh my!!

Yes folks that's right, it is the second most wonderful time of the year. Girl scout cookie time. To my extreme excitement I came home to freshly delivered Lemonades and Thin Mints..score. The motto of the Girl Scout cookie...Every Cookie has a Mission: To help girls do great things. Am I able to help that cookie succeed in it's mission.. heck yes I do. Those cookies make this girl do great things. I go to great lengths to hide my cookies not only from my over-indulging self but from other cookie hungry scavengers like myself. I will amazingly scarf more than one serving size per sitting and not even feel bad about it sometimes. So thank you girl scout cookie...for helping this girl do great things.

You do have to feel sorry for the boy scouts a smidgen. Sure they get to go camping and have pinewood derby's, while the girl scouts are learning to sew a button or plant a garden, but they get screwed in the win over America with just one box category. Dear Boy Scouts, your popcorn not so cool. Why don't you try selling something with some chocolate? Clearly girls are smarter than boys because girls know that chocolate will win over America. The boys need to work on marketing because those cookies sell themselves, you know when you see that little paper with lots of lines on it and a girl scout at your door, you know what to do, the poor girl doesn't even have to say anything.

I don't care if these girls are learning life lessons or not, I am just thankful for Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies & Lemonades! God Bless America!

So it Begins

I might as well be honest off the bat, I'm not that exciting and not gonna lie all the cool kids were doing the blog thing. So in an effort to be witty or funny I'll give it a whirl. It's hard to be creative who knew! Trying to find a good blog name that wasn't taken was like a needle in a haystack. I have settled on North of 10th. I used to live on 10th street and now live with my grandparents and have thus moved north of tenth street. Thought it sounded cool, maybe even one of those lasting names who knows maybe you will find yourself talking to your friends and saying "hey did you read north of 10th today?" One can only hope :)

I ran across this news story on one of my favorite blogs, and let me just say ew!
