The First Day of 2015

As soon as I found out A.Drama and Marvin were going to be here over New Year's I knew I had to try and talk them into a New Year's Day hike. I had read about first day hikes in a news article. They are sponsored by the American Hiking Society in conjunction with US State Parks to get people out and moving and enjoying the state parks to start off the new year in a healthy way. LOVE the idea! I have been dying to check out the Lost Dutchman State Park and this was the perfect opportunity.

Wouldn't you know it, just as they arrived in town, the temperatures continued to plummet, the northern part of the state got like two feet of snow, and there were flurries in Phoenix! Not only that but today we broke the 1906 record for coldest high, it only reached 46°F in the valley. Brrr! That wasn't going to stop us!

I woke up this morning and saw on Facebook that there was snow on the Superstition Mountains! What an extra treat! Little did I know that it was a HUGE deal, people were losing their minds. NiBo and I had been out that way just a week or so ago on our way up to Tortilla Flats and there was maybe 10 cars on the road with us. Not today. Everyone in their brother had their camera's out and tripods set up along every open inch of the shoulder on the route that leads to the park. I never said that Arizonans were a smart bunch and they just continue to demonstrate their lack thereof.

Thankfully we were able to make it past the gawkers and into the state park. I was hoping that less people would be willing to pay to get into the park, nope. Way wrong. There was hardly a spot to be found, luckily we found a spot just as someone was leaving otherwise I don't know how long we would have been looking.

The trails were jam packed with people climbing up to see the snow. I was surprised at the amount of people that had very small children with them that they were dragging up the mountain. Lots of people had dogs too.

We decided to take the Treasure Loop Trail, which is a 2.4 miles loop with an elevation gain of 500 ft. The trail is described as moderate difficulty and I actually didn't even think it was that bad. When compared to the Grand Canyon trail we hiked, this seems like literally a walk in the park ;)

The mountains in the background are almost completely white from the snowfall. The higher elevations got much more snow, up to 17" in some places!

The farther we got towards the top of our route the closer and closer we got to the snow. We actually timed it just about right, the sun was hidden until we got close enough to play in the snow and then it came out and let us capture some nice pictures with a pretty blue sky peeking through. The snow was melting very quick and you could already see the little streams starting flow.

Some had already played in the snow before us! Hello Olaf!

We made our own mini snowman so we could say we built an Arizona Snow man!

Without even being in search of Arizona Winter, I definitely found it. I had to search for Fall, but winter came to me! Arizona has had a weird weather year in 2014 from historic flooding to giant dust storms, I was there to see it all! Hopefully 2015 doesn't have too many surprises in the weather department. Next week (just in time for A.Drama and Marvin to leave) the temperatures return to a more normal temperature in the lower/mid 70's. I will welcome them back with open arms.

Check back for a final look back at my 2014 and what's in store for me in 2015! I hope everyone had a great New Years eve and a great start to their New Year!

The Snow Pile

You may remember me talking about the Illinois winter that would never end right? Believe it or not, winter is still not giving up just yet.

This photo was taken while I was waiting for dad to get off work on February 10th, that is my car, a Ford Escape. This picture was actually taken before we got several more huge snows. They had end loaders up on top trying to pile the snow higher so they would have room for all of it. I should note that this is all the snow from a huge parking lot, this happened to be the area where they had to pile it all, since they ran out of room. Only so much of the pile would actually fit in the picture.

When I left for Arizona, I made dad promise to keep me posted on the pile, I was curious to see how long it would take it all to melt.

Here is the April 16th update...

and here is today's update, May 7th...

Snow gets so gross as it melts and all the dirt particles show. Yuck! I'm surprised there is so little left, I joked that it would last until June, but I'm not that far off!

The weather back home has finally hit the 70's so it's been good and warm to melt that snow! Today I was surprised that it was warmer back home than it was here today! It only made it up to 77°F today, and was 90°F back home! The thing about 90° back home is the humidity, mom said it was starting to feel sticky out today.

Don't feel too bad for me, here is what next week's forecast is looking like

One Week of 2014

I have sat down several times to write my first post of 2014 but I feel like this first week of 2014 has been so much longer than a week and every time I sat down to do it, I didn't so let's go back in time for a sec to catch up!

NiBo and I spent NYE playing Mario Kart and Mario Tennis on Nintendo 64...

Then New Years Day I worked OT...

On the 2nd day of the New Year it snowed...

The 3rd was just another lazy day...

On the 4th I prepared for the giant snow storm by washing my car (I was 8th in line at this point, and it took me an hour to get to the front)...

Then as the snow was coming down on the 5th Oliver tried to eat my breakfast...

Then on the 6th it was time to clean the snow off the cars, oh and the windchill was -39°F, and we had a Snow Day at work! :)

It warmed up on the 7th to -24°F, the roads were still icky so I took another snow day,

We couldn't leave town because of the roads but we could go down the street! You see, the city dumps all the snow they pick up from the downtown area to an empty lot, we call it Mt. GC, and as the pile got higher and higher we had to go climb it!
A.drama

That's me!

Oh hey down there

Then we noticed the giant icicles on the side of Gpa's workshop

Which brings us to today. Today I went back to work the roads were snowpacked in spots and the snow was still in half the lane in some places too, but I made it to work (oh hooray) Tonight all I have done is this blog post and watch the People's Choice awards. If you were impressed that I remembered what I did each day of the new year, you have my #Project365 to thank! A picture a day for a whole year, you can follow along on Instagram! (hlb_7)

Hope everyone has had a wonderful first week of 2014! Stay tuned for this year's Word of the year!

Merry Christmas 2013

Can you believe that it's finally Christmas time?! This year has gone by so fast it seems, they always do anymore.

Christmas Eve was spent at work, at least we got to go in early and leave early, because nothing is longer than the day before a holiday at work (unless you also consider going back to work after a holiday in there as well, both equally long)

OL was so excited to give me my present from her. She had a gift in particular that she was very excited to give. It was a deck of Sons of Anarchy playing cards! All our favorite characters on each card! Clay is the King, Gemma the queen, Jax the Ace and Opie the Jack. And of course, Wayne, Bobby, Juice, Tig, and Chibbs are in the deck too! What a FABULOUS present, thanks OL! ;)

To ease the pain of working the day before Christmas it was unofficial Ugly Sweater day at work, here are a few of my cube mates in their holiday cheer!

*********************************************
Christmas day was spent at my parents house. We had lots of fun! It's been our tradition the past couple years to have Christmas breakfast, this year we had yummy cinnamon rolls that were delish! A.drama made them in the bakery at her store.

Christmas begins later and later each year, as you get older you cherish the days off from work and the extra sleep in time, we aren't 3 anymore and can wait to see what Santa has brought us. Everyone gathers around and we go around the room each person opens a present then on to the next, we like to enjoy our gift giving. Here are a few pictures from this year...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas this year. I know I did! Tons of great presents, it's hard to choose a favorite! The rest of the day after we opened presents was spent watching movies and TV with the family.

I can't believe that 2014 is just around the corner! Merry Christmas everyone!!
