Blue Apron

Have you heard about this whole Blue Apron thingy? I had seen several promoted posts on Facebook about it and it looked cool. Basically it's a food delivery service and then send you pre-portioned meals for the week with a serving size for 2 people. The price comes out to be about $9.99 per serving, which considering it's really that bad. PLUS I don't have to go grocery shopping.

Now I am no Chef Boyardee but I have a few kitchen tricks that I know, so I decided to give it a try. The only thing they assume you have (besides the needed utensils) is salt, pepper and olive oil, everything else comes in the box!

Having completed my first week of meals, I thought I would give you a sneak peek at what I had cooking up in the kitchen and the opening of my first box!

The meats in the box come sandwiched between two big ice packs and everything is in a freezer bag to keep the ingredients cool during shipping. I opted for the Saturday delivery so most likely I'd be home when it arrived, you know living in the desert and all. You do have the option to pick your day of delivery, I think it's Wednesday-Sunday to pick from.

Here's all the ingredients measured out and labeled for each meal. Inside the box (not shown) are cardstock pages with the recipes and how to prepare them. I didn't take many during pictures but here are my first week of finished products!

Dukkah-Spiced Salmon with Spring Vegetables & Oyster Mushroom Ragout

First off this meal was my first attempt at cooking salmon and I think I did ok. This recipe took the longest to prepare because there was a lot of googling of how to prepare these random 'spring vegetables'! Celery Root and Fennel bulb with fronds were not previously part of my vocabulary but they are now and I just might be able to remember how to prepare them.

Sirloin Tip Steaks with new potato, asparagus and radish hash

This meal was much easier to prepare as far as cutting the vegetables, and I had heard of all of them which helps. The only skill yet to master here is the art of the medium well done steak. Following the directions and checking with the meat thermometer when I went to cut them they were still quite pink and a little bloody yet, so I decided to err on the side of caution and threw them back on the skillet for a bit more done finish.

Laotian Larb Gai with sticky rice, peanuts and mint

This was by far the easiest as far as cutting all the vegetables and it was quite tasty and might even be my favorite of the three. I did have a bit of a learning curve here with cooking the rice. When preparing two different things on the stove top it's important to know which dish is on which heat setting, it can be quite confusing....

the vegetables are looking good on that medium high heat

uh oh, the rice was accidently sent on high instead of low to simmer :(
RIP sticky rice

Overall I was able to get one serving of rice saved from the heat, the rest was stuck to the bottom of my pot. Always something to learn in the kitchen right?!

My opinion of Blue Apron so far is great! The meals do take a bit of prep time if you aren't familiar with fennel and how to cut it lol. I like that everything is pre-measured so there is not waste. The price is very reasonable considering everything you get. It would be better suited for someone who can use both servings at once. I was under the assumption that I would fix the two servings and save one for lunch or dinner the next day, but that's just not happening. The food is much better fresh and sometimes you just don't want the same thing back to back, especially when they are quite exotic to your palate that is used to pizza.

The complexity of the meals hasn't scared me off, and I like that you have the option to skip a week if you are on vacation or just don't like what they have scheduled. My work schedule has changed for the next 5 weeks so I won't be getting home until 8:30 which really isn't ideal for preparing a 'fancy' meal.

For me it was a good thing to try, but I don't think it has the long term likeability. I wish there was an option for just a single serving and I'd be totally in! If you decide to give it a try they do have family serving options as well. Let me know if you give it a try and how it went!

bon appétit!

I'm on a Mission

No... not that kind of mission, but a mission nonetheless. I am racking my brain trying to change my outdoor patio space. It's the first thing I see when I come home from a long day at the office and it's just kind of blah. It needs more color and character.  I've been on Pinterest longer than I care to share today looking for ideas.

The green faux turf was there when I moved in, but I'm thinking a brighter rug wouldn't hurt. The weather here is finally starting to be 'cooler' I can definitely feel it in the mornings and evenings. Funny how lower 80's/upper 70's is chilly here. I'm told October the temps fall quick throughout the month, though today it's supposed to be a high of 100° which the weatherman says is our last 100° day. The 10 day forecast doesn't look too bad, although of course there would be rain in there because I just washed my car today.

Any ideas to transform this space? Don't expect and update too soon, I'm sure this will require extensive research and procrastination.

Cold Pizza & Spoiled Milk

So I may be a little rusty in the domestic goddess part of life. On the one hand I have determined that Pizza Hut pizza tastes better cold than Papa Johns does, but PJ's wins with their garlic breadsticks.

I haven't quite got myself into a schedule where I actually plan a dinner or have a legitimate list when I go to the grocery store. Today my grocery cart was filled with bologna, milk, hamburger buns, Jacks pizza, baby wipes (good for removing my makeup) the most adorable mini Ben & Jerry's, cat litter, a sunshade (still not quite what I'm looking for) toilet paper and dishwasher soap... I'm pretty much Martha Stewart.

I did get around to cleaning out the fridge today, there were a few things left over from when mom and dad were here, yeah.... threw that out. Including the spoiled milk. I get on little cereal kicks but I think I had better just stick to the 1/2 gallon size, even better that they were on sale for $0.99!

Clearly I have some Pinteresting to do or need to open a cookbook but I'm just lazy and not ready to have to legit cook. And who could blame me when that Papa John gives me 50% off coupons in my inbox?!

Speaking of inbox, I have a care package en route from Illinois, the most important cargo (besides the printer cable I left at home) is some Monical's pizza dressing! It will be the perfect thing for my 3/$9 Jacks pizza, I've also been told by a friend that the secret to really fancying up a plain ol' Jacks pizza is to add basil, so I might have to give that a whirl. Mom is also including some clothes I left behind.. oopsie! (Thanks mom!)

Check back tomorrow and I'll fill ya in on my first Az adventure.

Christmas Cookies

We spent a better part of the evening decorating Christmas Cookies! A.Drama thinks she is a cookie Picasso and just because she has had some cake decorating experience she thinks she can talk down to other people's cookies. I was told several times that I am an amature and that I'm holding the frosting bag wrong. Well la de da! Our cookies turned out fabulous, although just looking at them may give you diabetes, so look at your own risk. We also may have had a kitten incident, we had set the cookies on our back porch to cool and inadvertently closed a kitten out there as well. After a loud crash we had a few casualty cookies and found an adorable kitten imprint on one of the cookies (see picture below)

They may not be up to Martha Stewart quality but we had fun!

I Haven't Been Blogging

I have been pinning on Pinterest. I can't help it, it really is addicting. I even got OL hooked on it a bit. It's amazing that a few hours of Pinterest can make you feel so accomplished. I feel like I'm Martha Stewart. Have I made anything I've seen on Pinterest... well no. But I feel like it's making me an even more creative person. I may have a slight new obsession with Mason Jars, turns out the are so useful.

What did people do before the internet?

Happy Pinning! :)
