I Heart Bookclub

I love the last week of the month. Tonight was the glorious night of the month we lovingly refer to as bookclub night.

This month's book was 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote. This was a very interesting read, that led to some interesting discussions, true that some may not have been quite book related but they were entertaining none the less.

If you follow the 'Page Turner's blog (if you don't you totally should) you'll learn that bookclub is not just about the reading. Each bookclub we all share a little more about ourselves and have really started to build relationships with each other. Yes we all work together and see each other as much as we do our own family, but this group takes it a step further and enjoys hanging out with each other outside of work even if it's only once a month for a few hours.  I really love this group and I'm so glad that am a part of it. Whether they know it or not they are all shaping the woman I'm growing into. Each of them has a different background, a different story to tell, and they have all been so kind to me and I really really appreciate it.

Back to the book... 'In Cold Blood' is the story of a family that is murdered in the small farming town of Holcomb, Kansas. There was no apparent motive for the crime and hardly any clues.

The book begins with by walking through the day, which is to be their last, of the Clutter family and parallels with the day of the killers as they make their way to the small town. As the book progresses you learn more about the family and the killers alike. It's such a different side of a murder because along with the facts you are getting background on how the killers grew up, their lives up to this point and lets you see how they got to this place. Capote then walks you through the trial up to the execution of the guilty.

It's a very interesting book to read. I had seen the movie "Capote" with Phillip Seymor Hoffman as Capote and it walks you through what Truman did to write this book. Having seen the film, I think it took me to a different place reading the book. I saw it through Capote's experience, the long hours and research he put into this book is amazing. Over 8,000 pages of notes from interviews with the townspeople and extensive interaction with the killers themselves.

I gave a 3 and would recommend it to anyone to definately have on their list of books to read. It is definately a unique piece of literature.

People Make Me Laugh Hard

Oh people never cease to amaze me...

My brother and I enjoyed a nice outdoor concert this evening in the other big city as one of their neighborhood park series. My bro's guitar teacher also plays guitar in the Delta Kings (which is who we went to see tonight).

It was a perfect night for it, I thought it was going to be a scorcher but it had cooled off by time they started and the storms hadn't even thought about hitting CU yet. So as we are getting settled into our lawn chairs we placed in the shade, others were starting to gather and find their seats too. This older gentleman brings his chair up and sits insanely close to the band (most people tend to give a buffer area as to not scare the band or be so close to the speakers.. but ok whatever nothing strange..YET!)

He then proceeds to make a funny (to him) joke about there not being any shade and he should just grab a tree. He then sprints to the nearest tree in a weird jerking movement, that really look more like he was violating the tree, he attempts to uproot a tree (fail). AND, just when we thought the weird akwardness was done as he retreated to his seat... we.were.wrong.

He sat there for a little while and we were listening to the band then we happen to, I think at the exact same moment, catch at glimpse of the old man. He had pulled out a recorder... a recorder!?.. and was "rocking out" with the band and proceeded to do so for the remainder of the concert, in between of course the classic old man quick nap. He'd pop back awake and continue as if he never drifted off.

Here is the list of some of the questions when then proceeded to ask ourselves:

1. Who has a recorder laying around that isn't in 5th grade (we learned to play hot-cross-buns in 5th grade)
2. Where do you purchase such a fancy musical device (if not buying it from the school)
3. Is he with the band?
4. Where do you buy rock music for the recorder sheet music?
5. Is that a recorder in your pocket?

Unfortunately the concert was cut short by about 40 minutes do to the impending huge storm coming through (ugh again with the weather!) But we had a good time. Good music, an interesting drive home (we caught up with the storm and starred it in the face!) and some great people watching stories so I'd call it a success. If you are ever around or see the Delta Kings are playing somewhere definately worth checking out.

Someone Forgot to Batten Down the Hatches

For you city folk, the above picture is what we, in a small town, like to call excitement. The whole city is a buzz with gossip, rumors, and gawking after the storm rolled through last night. This does not at all compare to the tornado in 'Page Turner's town, but it sure does give GC and the surrounding towns something to yak about.

Back story. No newsflash that we have had some weather in these here parts lately, rain out the wazoo and on top of the ridiculous too soon heat and humidity we have had the staple of summer, severe weather. [PS this week is lightning safety awareness week if you didn't know] About 11:30 last night the power went out across our humble little town (NO A/C! AHHH) and the rooms were lit up like the 4th of July with all the lightning. My cat was hidden under the bed from the claps of thunder and the wind outside would have blown you over I'm guessing and rain to boot.

As I try to get ready this morning sans proper lighting, things have calmed down, still no power though (how do the Amish do it). Walking out the back door I saw the first casualty, one of gma's tree branches hanging low from the ground. Driving the few blocks I did, the clean up had already began. Our main road was closed as the crews picked up the pieces of several large trees that were across the road. Tree limbs and branches were all over the place covering the streets with branches and confetti of leaves. I being an observant keeping my eyes on the road kind of driver (I think they bought it) I happened to miss the above picture on my way into work, which actually is weird because I have been admiring them building our new grain bin (they build the top first and add the rows to the bottom, who knew) go up.

Pay attention my city-dwelling friends... this is how you know you live in a small town. While I did in fact miss the sight this morning AND was at work in a town 32 miles away. I was notified 3 times today of the occurrence out at the elevator. First via photo from my dad... yes that's right, photographic damage of the carnage was already circulating. Someones husband sent a photo to the wife who works with my dad, who then sent it to all the GC folks at the insurance company... word travels fast in a small town. Second time was from my gma when I called to see if the power came back on, without even asking. Third time was from a friend who wanted to make sure I looked for it when I was on my way home... I know redic right. Small Town.

Then when I did finally get around to seeing it myself.. brace yourself another "You know you live in a small town moment" there was a line of cars out there stopping to gawk. I kid you not, there was a good line of cars coming probably from neighboring towns too, to come see what all the fuss was about. I swear it, that in itself is a sight to see.

Then the good stuff comes when I get home and ask gpa about. He always gets the lowdown. Everyday come 'bout 3:30/3:45ish gpa can be found out at the restaurant (that is literally what they call it, we have more than one food establishment in town, but where ever the farmers/old timers/old men go sit for coffee is 'the restaurant' but is said more like rest-rent) this is the place where all the old men go to gossip, really whoever said women gossip, you should here the stories I hear. This is a men's only gathering... but gpa got all the details....

It was about 70mph straight line winds that knocked that sucker right off its concrete base pulling out the fasteners, tore up all the jacks they had (since it's build from the top down, they jack up each row and add the new one to the bottom, I know it's weird) AND they only had one more row to go before they were finished. I guess they will be starting over huh. So on top of all that, there were semi trailers blown over and a tanker trailer blew over, and there are numerous trees down all over town.

So fact of the day... living in a small town and working 30some miles away, you will in fact learn of all events that are occurring in the small town. You will know about it, what really happened AND every rendition of she said/I heard and so forth, before the news crew has even been there. Thank you small town, I love you!

and PS our power came back on around 8am this morning according to gma, I know you were wondering.

~ Happy Father's Day Dad! ~

Here's to you Dad...
Sure you may sometimes be a goober and get our orders wrong at the drive thru (thank goodness they don't serve ham boogers or onion pittal pattles) or do akward Ricky Bobby hand gestures because I guess you don't know what to do with your hands sometimes and yes most of the time we have to give you fashion lessons before you can safely leave the house...

BUT, we can always drag you to anything/anywhere, car shows, motorcycle museums, cubs games, sporting events and band concerts. You've always been in the stands cheering us on no matter what the event. You can grill a mean burger and squash the scary spiders.  You'll lend a hand to move my crap without a second thought and are always around to fix a car, and offer a good-bye hug and an "I love you" before we leave.Thank you for always being there and being a great dad! Enjoy your Day, you deserve it!

Thank you Dad! Love you!

* Challenge Accepted *

Summer Book Challenge
30 20 Books in 93 Days
June 21- September 22

I've been hearing about all these great books to read and I keep saying, "Oh I want to read this" but never follow through. There isn't a whole lot of good TV on during the summer and I can just DVR the good ones for a rainy day. Another of my summer goals is to be outside..in the sun..and get rid of the pastiness (I've got a good start going!) and what better activity to multi-task with while enjoying the outdoors?? Reading of course!

I have been seeing several Summer must read books on websites and in magazines. I have a good start to my list and can't wait to get started. To my fellow bookclub members, I'm not counting bookclub books for my challege in case you were wondering.

Here is the first 5 I have on my list:
  1. Lunch In Paris- Elizabeth Bard
  2. Dead End Gene Pool- Wendy Burden
  3. Both Ways is the Only Way I Want it- Maile Meloy
  4. Mistress of the Art of Death- Ariana Franklin
  5. The Bronze Horseman- Paullina Simons
After thinking about it, and my follower comments 30 may have been a little overzealous of me. I'm going to go with 20 books instead. Some of the books I want to read are a little lengthy and the wise 'Page Turner' put it into perspective, you need to keep the enjoyment there and not rush it. I hope I complete the challenge but if I don't make it to 20 at least I got some good reading in this summer season! :)

10 Things: Blogpodge

It's like a hodgepodge but with blog post ideas. I feel like Dug from UP!... squirrel. That's how many blog post ideas I have on my mind... squirrel.

So.. let's get started. Let's make this user interactive I'll give you my post ideas and a mini description and we'll see what you want to read my loyal followers. [never mind that I will probably post some of these anyway]

1. I couldn't dedicate a whole blog post to this but I have to say it... I am in love with Dierks Bentley's new song 'On the Ridge' it's amazing and stuck in my head I've listened to it like 5 times in the past 2 hours (much to my brothers annoyance for hijacking his computer) Well now I take that back, I'll listen to the whole album and give a review.. I'm very excited about it.

2. A running post of 'Old Lady' Quotes of the day.. let me give you an example of the hilariousness that could ensue. In a "mispoke" as she called it during a debated conversation regarding BP execs.... "Do you think [the CEO of insurance company] knows that on a Friday afternoon all we do is sit around and jack off?" Queue the puzzled looks of those around wondering if she did indeed just say that.

3. A summer self-challenge. 30 books from June 21 (official first day of summer) until September 22 (official end of summer/first day of fall).. can I do it? What books will I choose?

4. Beginning to turn a hobby into a passion. What did I do today to get me started? What do I plan to do?

5. Can you change your stars? I feel a wind of change starting to blow first steps

6. Virtual Vacation Planning- do's and don'ts, how's the Savannah trip planning coming along.

7. Summer goals- things I want/need to do to get on track with life.

8. Sibling Bonding- we have some fun plans/ideas floating around for sibling bonding.

9. Squirrel

10. Everyone says a life goal is to write a novel-- I too have dreams of being a published author, about what no clue.. didn't say it was going to happen tomorrow. But what does it take to actually publish a book, what do you have to do, who do you have to show it too, etc. etc.

So loyal blog readers, what do you think? What do you want to read?

Moblie Thoughts

I'm trying something new. I have turned into a texter and get text updates for the weather, sports, etc. etc. So I am trying blog posts from my phone. Wisdom on the go...we'll see how this goes :)

WHY?!

Why do people show up 25-30 minutes early for work? You don't get paid more.. stay home!

I Don't Like..

One up-ers and Interrupters and there is a lot of that going around. If you feel that you may be any of the above or know someone who is, please take action today. Consider this your warning because I might snap a little.

I feel a mental-health day from the insurance company is going to happen for me here pretty soon. I got vacation days burning a hole in my pocket. I think I might work on planning my fake virtual vacation. 'The Page Turner' and I are going to Savannah, GA... want to come? Leave us your ideas of things to do while there and maybe we will let you come on our imaginary virtual vacation.

I Feel Stuck in a Rut

Stuck- Ash Bowers

Collar's wet on the back of my neck and the sweat, it burns my eyes.
Day in, day out, it's all the same on this hot assembly line.
I watch the hours of my life get chewed up by that clock.
I'm gonna lose my mind if I don't find a way out of this box.

Stuck in a rut, stuck in this town, stuck in a job that's keepin’ me down.
I need to get these boots out of the mud.
It's time to roll on, get in a groove, pull up the stakes and make me a move.
A spin of the wheel is bound to change my luck, I ain't stayin’ stuck.

I'm gonna take every dollar that I made out of that farmers bank.
Make one last stop at the Tiger Mart and fill up that thirsty tank.
Gonna find a road to a new zip code, they can kiss my hotel lights.
It's never too late to start again, I've wasted too much time.

I’m a little burnt out, a little ticked off.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, sometimes Sunday.

Stuck in a rut, stuck in this town, stuck in a job that's keepin’ me down.
I need to get these boots out of the mud.
It's time to roll on, get in a groove, pull up the stakes and make me a move.
A spin of the wheel is bound to change my luck, I ain't stayin’, I ain’t stayin’ stuck.

No, no, stuck.

Hello Sun, We Finally Meet

Ahh sunshine. Anyone who has seen me lately knows that my color is somewhere between a corpse and albino... I'm working on that, and today was day 1.

Our family has a small pool that we have been putting up that past couple of years, nothing big, just a soft sided pool that's probably about 12' across and about 4' deep, we lovingly refer to it as the family aquatic center. We had a close call earlier this week, a tiny hole threatened my dreams of being a bronze beauty. With a little team work we were able to locate the hole and get it all patched up. Unfortunately a water main broke the other day mid fill and our lovely pool is a nasty rust color. That didn't stop me...

I went down earlier to the family aquatic center to help with the clean-up effort and found the cool water way to tempting to ignore. So I got the floaties out and proceeded to park by white self in my floatie and catch some rays before the storm rolled through.

Good news is, I'm no longer white, it's more of a light pink.. which is color and I'm not complaining. I did put some sun block on so it's not a burn just some light coloring. Hopefully my quest for more outdoor activities and realaxing in the cool waters of the aquatic center will help shed some light on my otherwise transparent skin. So thank you sun for making an appearance today, I hope we will be seeing more of you.

Why Can't We Be Friends?

I was intrigued by my Anonymous followers notion of "to have a friend, you have to be a friend" comment. What is Friendship?
"Friendship is the cooperative and supportive relationship between people, or animals. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, affection, and respect along with a degree of rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis..."
Since 'Anonymous' had an interest in this particular quote:

"The only way to have a friend is to be one.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

I did a little bit of research and found this response as to the meaning of the above quote. "Emerson teaches a simple truth here. We cannot demand true friendship of someone if we are not doing our part. Nor can we merit that true friendship without being a true friend."  Take that as you will and apply it to your own friendships.

So here's to you 'Anonymous' some friendship quotes:

"Friendship isn't a big thing - it's a million little things" --Unknown

"Stay strong, and remember that relationships are like broken glass, sometimes it's better to leave it alone rather than try to put the pieces back together and get hurt"

"Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about who came, and never left your side."

"You can hardly make a friend in a year, but you can easily offend one in an hour." -- Chinese Proverb

"True friends not only protect you from others when something goes bad, but from yourself when you try to take blame."

"A friend is there before you know it, to lend a hand before you ask it, and give you love just when you need it most."

"Friends are … the people you are reminded of when you see something they might like and you know this because you know them so well. They are the people whose pictures you have and whose faces are in your head, regardless. They are the people you feel safe around because you know they care about you. They call just to see how you are doing, because a friend doesn’t need an excuse. They tell you the truth, the first time, and you do the same. You know that if you have a problem, they are there to listen. They are the people who won’t laugh at you or hurt you, and if they do hurt you they try hard to make it up to you. They are the people you love, regardless of whether you realize it or not. They are the people whose hand you can hold, or you can hug or give them a kiss and not have it be awkward because they understand the things you do and they love you for them. They stick with you and stand by you. They hold your hand. They watch you live and you watch them live and you learn from them. Your life is not the same without them."

"A loyal friend laughs at your jokes when they're not so good, and sympathizes with your problems when they're not so bad."
--Arnold H. Glasgow

I'm intersted to see what everyone else thinks of Ralph's quote and it's meaning and what are some things that your friends have done for you, helped you through, and what you think it takes to be a good friend.

How Do You Like It?

Today I just found out is National Iced Tea Day, um Iced Tea is only like my favorite beverage ever.. well almost. But everywhere I go I always get tea.

Sun tea, and brewed tea are the best no lemon, no sugar straight up tea with ice, that's how I roll.

The Origin of Iced Tea:
In 1904, English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World Fair. It was a sizzler of a day, and fair visitors didn't want anything hot. Rather, they needed something to quench their thirst... something cold. He dumped some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. This was the first known use of iced tea.

Summer is almost here and what better way to welcome the blistering heat and humidity that surely awaits us than with a big cold jug of iced tea.. aw go ahead throw in a little bit of sugar if you're feeling saucy to celebrate.

Waiting Sucks! Bring It on!

Season 1 = good
Season 2 = Amazing
Season 3 = looks hella good.

I am too excited for Season 3 of TrueBlood to begin this Sunday. Since 'FM' hasn't even finished watching season 1..gasp! I won't spoil anything.

But I have my thoughts on what's going down to follow up with how Season 2 ended. I loved having the DVDs for the first season and stayed up way too late watching them like 3/4am... I know. Then I had to wait week by week by week to watch the second season... it got GOOD! I was down to the last three episodes then the DVD for 2 came out and we bought and hurried up and watched them all.. gotta love DVD.

So now I'll have to agonizingly wait as the show increases exponentially in awesomeness. Bring on the werewolves and the hott vamps.

A Few Quotes

"Somewhere there is another girl prettier than you, smarter than you, taller than you, and skinnier than you. Another girl somewhere is more outgoing, more laughable, more laid back, and more athletic . Another girl somewhere is not you. You may not be perfect, but someone someday will think you are. They will love you for each and *every* imperfection and flaw. They will wait all day just to see you and stay all night just to hold you. To them, you will be more than perfect. You'll be the love of their life. And life without you would not and could not be"

"Tough girls come from New York, Sweet girls they're from Alabama, but us Illinois girls, we have fire and ice in our blood. We can ride horses, drive tractors, throw left hooks, and drink with the boys, all while making some sweet tea, darlin. And lord knows if we have an opinion, you are going to hear it!"

"Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” -- Mark Victor Hansen

10 Things: That I Worry Entirely Too Much About

I borrowed this post idea from Wendy @ The Frisky (love #2, lol)[check the link at home work friends, unpredicatable material and might be blocked] who got the idea from this video... funny stuff.

So here are my 10 Things that I sometimes worry about (almost excessively) in no particular order, some are stupid but some are legit.
  1. An unsecured load on a semi will come crashing down upon me while driving on the interstate resulting in similar scenario to #2 or a flat like a pancake scenario.
  2. I will hit a deer and it will become lodged in the windshield and kick me in the face (money-maker) and I will be horribly disfigured for life or worse...die.
  3. I will be the spinster sister and have 50 cats and never have a family.
  4. The house will catch on fire and I will lose all of my pictures (almost to the point where I think about buying a firesafe big enough to house all my "priceles" items).
  5. Death by fire ants.
  6. Throwing up in front of people in public (I really don't know proper protocol on that, do you tell someone and who?, do you try to clean it up yourself and with what?)... freaks me out.
  7. How to get to some place that I've never been before. where do you park, what door do you go in, how do you order, who cleans up you or them... honestly in order this is number 1 on the list, I freak out a lot about this.. I hate going someplace I have never been just because I don't know the layout, helps if someone else has been there good, helps. So if I've never been somewhere you want me to go I will ask 400 million stupid detail questions if you know me, you know this is true and have probably had to deal with it.
  8. Having a party that no one will come to (it's happened and sucks, I don't have to many parties).
  9. My mind has too many dreams and I won't get to experience them all (which will happen..sad I have a lot of good ones).
  10. Never having enough money.

Would You Rather...

I ran across an interesting Would You Rather scenario today...

Would you rather ... have a completely gray mane by the age of 30 or slowly lose your hair so that you’re bald by 60?

In my mind this is a no brainer. I'd way rather be gray by 30 than bald.
1. I have what I consider a big head. It is a long oval shape not very conducive of carrying off the no hair look. You know how you do that pull your hair back with your hand trick in the mirror, yeah I got 7 yrs bad luck trying that after the mirror broke in horror.
2. I'm not pretty enough. No I'm not doggin on myself.. I know I can look cute sometimes but I really don't scream girly features.

So why could I pull of the gray hair look (in my mind)
1. It's easier to color hair if you have hair.
2. I can look like Rouge from X-Men and kick some ace
3. Gray hair doesn't really age you. I've seen some older women with gray hair but have a moder/young cut and it totally makes them look younger.
4. With the color comes a certain sophistication. You can either go the granny route and break out the moo-moos early or embrace it and go for the modern chic look and totally rock it.
5. Did I mention I wouldn't look good bald. and you can only have so many cute scarves and hats to cover with.

So which Would You Rather?

And She's back....

So I have no idea what has been going on, it's crazy how busy sneaks up on you like that. I think it was the holiday weekend that got me all busy-like. I haven't even caught up with TV shows or been on the computer more than to check my email quick.. crazy.

So with that said Summer is upon us. Primetime TV has taken its summer hiatus which makes me a little sad (not that I should be stuck inside watching television.. but let's face it, it's going to happen). Thankfully there are enough shows to keep my attention on the occasion that I may be spending my hours inside glued to the TV.

- The Bachelorette-- ok ok I know lame. I borderline hated myself for getting into the Bachelor but since I did, Ali was my favorite to win (not Vienna sausage, but Jake was a db so it all worked out [and ps for Jake and Vienna doing a dance together on the finale of DWTS..vomit enducing]), and I'm going to see how long I can keep up with this. I like her better in small doses apparently and now that the whole show is about her I have my doubts. Second, the more I watch the show I just can't believe that people really expect a reality tv show to pick your 25 potential husbands and let you narrow it down to 1, really?! I mean I'd love to have a husband as much as the next single gal.. but come on, is it possible with all the added drama and trying to keep ratings up as well?

- TrueBlood-- two words. Hot.Vampires. go ahead and judge. I got hooked on this show when my Netflix thought I might like it.. I did. Thank you Netflix. I don't even know what it is about this show that keeps me coming back. The boys aren't bad on the eyes and the crazy things that go on and I've gotten attached to the characters. And the show always ends with something crazy about to happen so you have to tune back in to see how it goes. Thank you HBO.

Some other shows that are new to the summer lineup that I'm going to check out include:

- The Good Guys (FOX)-- "This police action comedy from the mind of Burn Notice creator Matt Nix follows a young, by-the-book detective (Colin Hanks) who is teamed with a boozy veteran (Bradley Whitford) to solve the department's petty crimes — or Code 58s, as they're known. Reaper's Jenny Wade, Castle's Diana Maria Riva and Whitford's mustache also star." I love Colin Hanks so I'm excited about this one!

- Louie (FX)-- this looks funny from the previews I've seen. "Featuring a mix of sketches and stand-up comedy, this half-hour sitcom is based on the life of the brilliant standup comedian Louis C.K. as he balances life on the road with being a divorced father of two."

- Memphis Beat (TNT)-- "Produced by George Clooney's Smokehouse Productions, this cop drama stars Jason Lee as Dwight Hendricks, a Memphis police officer who lives with his mother. Dwight's intimate connection to the city sets him apart from other officers. Alfre Woodard also stars as Lt. Tanya Rice, Dwight's demanding boss."

I also want to try to get caught up on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Rescue Me. I have Rescue Me stored up on my Netflix for Wii to watch on a lazy too hot to go anywhere/rainy day day. So ya'll got anything else that I can get hooked on? I'm open for suggestions!

Also a little insight to my sad obssion with TV, I have all the premier dates on my calendar.. don't judge!
