I Don't Not Have It Together...but

I kinda feel like I don't have it together. I'm pissed that my home scale lied to me, so imagine my surprise when I weigh in tonight. Booo. I was up 1.4lbs, not the end of the world but easy to see where it could feel like the end of the world right?

I try my darndest to stay positive and find ways to keep my momentum on the up and up, but I tell you what. It is completely exhausting. Physically, emotionally and any other way one thing can be exhausting, keeping it together is exhausting.

I've Googled extensively into the wee hours of the morning sometimes, searching for an explanation as to how a seemingly average, fairly successful twenty-something with a semi-bright future can so easily feel like a pile of muck, stuck in a rut and have such a generally blah outlook. First I'd like to blame Facebook, no but really. In what time in the past were your peers life so readily available for viewing and comparison? So and so is having a baby, so and so is engaged. Blah blah.

Your twenties aren't what they used to be. I think it's kind of placed a disconnect between generations in that older generations remember their twenties and don't remember it being too difficult and younger generations look to past generations and see that they had already established so much at the same age. In my Google search I found a book 20 Something 20 Everything: A Quarter-Life Woman's guide to Balance and Direction I'm only 36 pages in and can already relate. So far the author is sharing research and findings after she interviewed many women both currently in their twenties and the previous generations of women now later in their lives and shares their reflections on the same period of time in their life.

I've already highlighted some common feelings that I share from excerpts from other twenty-somethings, "I experience misplaced energy from a weak sense of self. A lot of two steps forward, three steps back." or the statement "Twenty-something women spend a lot of time wondering, planning, and feeling overwhelmed while searching for answers."  UM HELLO!? These sentences were the first time that I, obviously through others, was able to myself articulate how I feel. The book also goes onto comparing how in the past women's roles were more defined, and women today have so many more opportunities which is awesome, but also creates the perplexity of "having it all" the family AND the successful career. And ain't it a b**** that men don't really have this. Their roles in society haven't changed nearly as women's have in the past decades, lucky jerks. So looking back women my age were typically married/children well on the road to happily ever after Leave it to Beaver family perfection [obviously I know that rarely is ones life perfect with no turmoil, it helps my case if everyone was Mrs. Cleaver, ok?]

Basically I'm overwhelmed, not in like a debilitating I-can't-leave-the-house kind of way (although sometimes it can feel like it), but more in the my mind is going a hundred million miles per minute and I can't figure out where I want to go. I'd love to look into other career opportunities but in this job market/economy who can afford to up and leave their 401k and health benefits in order to roam around finding a job in something interesting. I just don't have the luxury there. It's hard to not mental note compare where your classmates are in life because it's updated in your newsfeed.

All things seem to point to patience and time, a certain level of mediocrity, faith and a lot of dreams. So I will just continue to keep on keepin' on until a little bit of luck rolls my way, but sometimes it is just exhausting. I had to vent, thanks for listening. :)

WOO HOO

I happy to say that if you get with the program and stick with it, it works. Today after what I thought would be a terrible week I was down 2.2lbs at weigh in for a total of 7.6 lbs! Which is totally awesome!

I kinda feel like this year has come full circle a bit. I started off the year with such good intentions, as most do, then fell off the wagon over the summer. But the cooler weather has given me back the ambition and Weight Watchers has helped tremendously these short 3 weeks. That's all it took apparently. It appears that I have an attention span of a week, so weekly goals are more my speed. A few weeks ago at our meeting, yeah they really kinda like "Hi my name is Heather, I eat too much"... "Hi, Heather" we were talking how it's only about 6 weeks until Thanksgiving and think of all you can accomplish in 6 weeks. I hope I can keep up a lot of the same, it would be nice to get some confidence back.

I'll post some more recipes soon!

I joined Weight Watchers a few weeks ago and I'm glad to be back with it. I had joined once before several years ago and did really great with it but then fell off the wagon pretty hard and didn't quite get back up. Tonight was weigh in and I was down a 2.2lbs from last week bringing my total to 5.4! I got my 5lb sticker today! It's been really helpful to have gma making delicious dinners. Book Club: The Dry Grass of August

The Dry Grass of AugustTonight was book club night, this month we read The Dry Grass of August (my pick) If you know me at all, I procrastinate. Even though this was my pick and I've had a month to read it, I read it all last night.. that's how I roll.

I can't remember where I came across the review for this book, but it said if you like 'The Help' you would like this book. It's set in the south in the 50's during the violent times of segregation. Like the help, the story centers around a family struggling with their own demons and secrets as well as dealing with the maid/nanny is the growing violence of segregation.

We had a small group tonight, just four of us. But to my surprise, I got a 5 out of The Page Turner, this is a big deal to me, not only had she not read this book already of knew about it but it got a 5 from her, a 4 from the rest of us and led to a great discussion. I was proud. We talked about work, we talked about other books and we even mentioned politics a bit. Next month we are reading 'Conversations and Cosmopolitans' by Robert Rave.

Pinterest Project: Mason Jar to Go

My very first non-food Pinterest Project! The mason jar to go glass. Super easy to make and only costs $1.85. My only complaint is the condensation, but other than that it's totally cute! We threw around the idea of a knitted sleeve (but I don't know how to do that) or some kind of fabric wrap, maybe some burlap and a cute gingham bow (I just now thought of that!)

What you'll need:
Supplies
- Mason Jar any size (mine pictured is a Quart jar)
- 2 #14 finishing washers (got them at Ace $0.14 each)
- reusable straws (I found mine at our Alco store, Starbucks sells them too)

Tools
- hot glue gun
- something to punch or drill a hole in the top of your lid

Directions:
1. Wash your jar and straw obviously.
2. Drill a hole in the top of the lid (I used the drill press, but you can use a hammer and nail or something fancier)
3. Take your finishing washers and fill the inside with hot glue. I found it best to fill in a layer of glue first, then let that cool. Then go ahead and fill in another layer of glue (since it's kind of deep) You'll do this for the top and bottom of the lid.
4. Let your glue dry and bam you're done! Enjoy!

I'm not 100% on how the hot glue will hold up after washings but I'll keep ya posted.

Update:  I am having problems getting the hot glue to stick to the top of the jar lid. While the top piece is more for show, I appreciate it being there to help give a finished look. I tried scoring the top of the lid around where the glue would go to give it something to stick to but no luck. Man they just make it look so easy on Pinterest don't they...

Baby steps... Today I left the House

Well I managed to leave the house today, I even showered AND shaved my legs... I know, I'm so fancy. Upon leaving the house the biggest observation I made was man.. seriously, this heat! OVER IT! I am so ready to stop sweating and have crisp cool air that will let me keep my windows open at night. I miss that week were we were teased with cool evening temperatures. I'm also over the humidity, gross. Everything in the house just feels wet and damp... ick.

I have to go back to work tomorrow and I'm not happy about it. Sure you're thinking to yourself, the four day work week will make her feel better... it won't but I like where your heads at. Happy shortened work week everyone.

I'm Not Proud but...

I have done absolutely nothing this holiday weekend. It's kind of sad, and mostly lazy. I'm blaming Isaac and his 4" of rain, as if that makes me feel better. I have managed to be on track with my digital cleaning. I organized all my pictures on my hard drive by year and moved them off my computer to my external hard drive, which saves some space on my computers. I have slept more than I care to mention, pinned a million pins and managed to not get out of my pajamas for three days. I think I'm part bear, and I know fall is coming so I getting ready to hibernate for the winter.

I also took a look at my summer bucket list and didn't do so hot, I think I have a problem keeping personal goals, I've misplaced my motivation and can't find it, if you come across it let me know. I did sign up for a Holiday sewing class that starts in November, I'm looking forward to it. Maybe if your good you will get a special handmade gift from me for Christmas!

Hope everyone else was slightly more motivated than I this long holiday weekend. I might even try and leave the house tomorrow.

One Year Ago today...

I was on a plane bound for my first foreign adventure in Germany. I had so much fun and new experiences on that trip. The travel bug definitely bit me and hasn't let go, though paired with a finite number of vacation days and a limited budget, it leaves for a rather non-existent travel schedule. But here's a short trip down memory lane with a few of my favorite pictures from Germany
